How Long Should You Walk With Poles as a Beginner?

If you're new to walking with poles, one of the most common questions is simple: How long should I walk?

The good news is that pole walking is very forgiving. Because the poles help distribute effort across your whole body, many people find they can walk longer and more comfortably than they expected. But like any new activity, it's best to start gradually.

Start With 15–20 Minutes

For most beginners, 15–20 minutes is the perfect starting point. This gives your body time to learn the rhythm of using the poles without overworking your arms, shoulders, or core muscles. During your first few walks, focus more on technique than distance:

  • Keep your posture tall
  • Plant the poles lightly behind you
  • Let your arms swing naturally

Once the motion starts to feel smooth, the workout will feel more natural as well.

Gradually Build to 30–45 Minutes

After a week or two, many people find they’re comfortable walking 30–45 minutes with poles. At this point, something interesting happens. Because the poles engage your upper body, walking often feels easier and more balanced. The workload is shared between your legs, core, and arms.

That’s one of the reasons many walkers discover they can walk farther without feeling more tired.

Listen to Your Body

Your arms and shoulders may feel slightly sore during the first few sessions. That’s normal because you’re activating muscles that regular walking doesn’t use as much.

A good rule of thumb:

  • If you feel energized after the walk, you're on the right track.
  • If you feel overly fatigued, shorten the next walk slightly.

Consistency matters more than pushing too far too quickly.

Aim for 3–5 Walks Per Week

For beginners, a great routine is 3–5 pole walks per week. This provides enough practice to develop a natural rhythm while giving your muscles time to recover.

Many walkers eventually build up to 45–60 minute walks, but there's no rush. The goal is to make pole walking something you enjoy and stick with long-term.

The Surprising Part: Most People End Up Walking Longer

One of the most common things we hear from new pole walkers is:

"I didn't realize how much farther I could walk."

Because poles improve stability and reduce strain on joints, many beginners naturally extend their walks without even noticing. And that’s when walking really starts to feel less like exercise—and more like something you simply enjoy doing.

Let's Get Out There
Start with 15–20 minutes, build gradually to 30–45 minutes, and focus on consistency. With a little practice, you'll likely find yourself walking longer, stronger, and more comfortably than before.
