Maximizing Your Walk

Nordic walking poles are a sure way to get the most out of your walk because of the full body workout that it provides. However, whether you are Nordic or plain old walking here are some tips to help maximize the benefits of your walk.

  • Inject short bursts of intense walking every few minutes of your walk. This method, known as high-intensity interval training (HIIT), has been used by cyclists and runners for years to increase heart rate, breathing and muscle activity to help improve cardiovascular fitness.
  • Consider carrying something weighted, like a filled backpack, ankle weights or wrist weights to increase the demand on your muscles to deliver additional benefits.  It doesn't have to be heavy, just enough to work a bit harder!
  • Many people listen to their favorite music for motivation and enjoyment but it can also help a walking workout move more quickly.  Try adding your favorite podcast or a new audiobook to your routine and see what happens!
  • Ensure you develop a regimen that you are comfortable with maintaining.  Walking is highly beneficial but it should also be enjoyable and not seen as a task.  Having a routine that fits your schedule and provides maximum health benefits is one that you will enjoy and be able to stick with!
