What is the Best Surface for Pole Walking for Beginners?
We are often asked what kind of surface is best for beginners to pole walking. Here are some thoughts on what is best as well as what to avoid.
Best:
- Paved Paths or Sidewalks – Smooth, even surfaces provide stability and reduce the risk of tripping. Ideal for getting comfortable with the poles.
- Packed Dirt or Gravel Trails – Slightly softer than pavement, these offer a bit of natural resistance without being too uneven.
- Grass (Well-Maintained) – A cushioned surface that’s gentle on joints, though it can be a bit more challenging to balance on.
- Treadmills (Indoors) – A good, controlled environment for practicing technique, but it lacks the full-body engagement of outdoor walking. That said, this one might be something to build to.
Avoid:
- Sand (too unstable),
- Loose gravel or rocky trails (risk of ankle twists),
- Uneven terrain (until you build more confidence).
Pole walking might appear easy, but a good surface is a great way to get started and to get comfortable, particularly if you struggle with balance or stability. "Let's Get Out There" and give it a try!
